As we continue through our ‘Collision’ series covering all of 1 Samuel this past Sunday we had the joy of hearing from Matt Noble. In his sermon Matt showed us that in 1 Samuel 17 we see familiar events, events that are so familiar I’m afraid most of us miss the greater meaning of the story.

Yes, David defeated a giant, but the story isn’t meant to teach us that we can defeat giants too. Instead the story exists to show us the glory of the greater son of Jesse. David’s son who is also David’s Lord, Jesus Christ, stands forth in these verses acting as our substitute, defeating the giants of Satan, sin, and death, and His victory is imputed to those who are ‘in Him’ by faith.

We can face our giants for sure, but we can only face them because Christ already has, and as we face them we confidently stand strong because in His triumph we triumph. Amen.
