Genesis 41:37-57

*Below is Pastor Andrew’s teaching outline from Sunday’s sermon, not a word for word manuscript. This is meant as aid in seeing the thought and direction of the sermon.

Life’s Journey is highly unpredictable. (From Bible College to SonRise)

Through the ups and downs we see the sovereign work of God leading in the big and small discussions, in the ones we control and those we don’t so too as we turn to Jospeh this morning we come to what many call the mountain top of His journey

How’d we get here:

Jospeh has been on a roller coaster 13 year journey:

Sold

Put in prison

Forgotten

And here and now he stands before Pharaoh and interprets the dream, and lays out and administrative plan to help save the people

Will he be forgotten again… will eh return to the pit

Well as we move into our text today we see the Jospeh finally arrives at the top.

God will take him from the pit to the palace and in so doing will save many,

Just as Christ when from the palace to the pit to save many

So as we open let’s join where we left off with Jospeh before pharoah:

‌I. Appointed By Pharaoh (37-45)

Genesis 41:37–45ESV

This proposal pleased Pharaoh and all his servants. And Pharaoh said to his servants, “Can we find a man like this, in whom is the Spirit of God?” Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has shown you all this, there is none so discerning and wise as you are. You shall be over my house, and all my people shall order themselves as you command. Only as regards the throne will I be greater than you.” And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “See, I have set you over all the land of Egypt.” Then Pharaoh took his signet ring from his hand and put it on Joseph’s hand, and clothed him in garments of fine linen and put a gold chain about his neck. And he made him ride in his second chariot. And they called out before him, “Bow the knee!” Thus he set him over all the land of Egypt. Moreover, Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I am Pharaoh, and without your consent no one shall lift up hand or foot in all the land of Egypt.” And Pharaoh called Joseph’s name Zaphenath-paneah. And he gave him in marriage Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera priest of On. So Joseph went out over the land of Egypt.

‌A.Because God’s Spirit is With Him

1st time since genesis 1 that the Spirit of God has been mentioned

We have seen the work of the holy spirit in opening the eyes of the lost through out scripture

It is through the holy spirit that we receive the gifting to do the work of the kingdom

Here Pharaoh acknowledges (within his realm of knowledge) the truth of the wisdom that comes fro the HS

‌B. Given Charge as 2nd in all Egypt

He is appointed what would later be known as the vizier or Prime minister in Egypt

‌C. Given the Clothing and Authority of Royalty

(Ring, Robe, Collar, & Chariot)

‌D. Given a New Life

Name: Unknown ( 4 personal; names) can range from “The God said, let him live” to “Joseph who is called life”

Family: Given a wife from what would be one of the most prestigious Religious families in the kingdom

-ON would later be name Heliopolis and was the center of worship for Ra.

-Now again the Egyptian religion was an important aspect of the whole of their society so to give the daughter of their primary priest to Jospeh is a highly benevolant gift and sign of acceptance.

Pharaoh truly sees him as one of their own who will save them, but again recognizes that tis not through a political skills but a religious one.

-The text makes no claim against Jospeh as he full takes on the role of an Egyptian, by the end of vs 45. He is fully enveloped into his new culture.

And from this new Place he will go to work:

‌II. Fulfills His Task (46-49)

Genesis 41:46–49ESV

Joseph was thirty years old when he entered the service of Pharaoh king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh and went through all the land of Egypt. During the seven plentiful years the earth produced abundantly, and he gathered up all the food of these seven years, which occurred in the land of Egypt, and put the food in the cities. He put in every city the food from the fields around it. And Joseph stored up grain in great abundance, like the sand of the sea, until he ceased to measure it, for it could not be measured.

-At 3o years old Jospeh goes to work preparing for what is to come

He worked hard toward the goal of storing up for the future

-He never lost sight of what was to come

-Knowing the end he prepared well in the mean time

-He gathers from every corner of the kingdom (Gathered like the sand of the sea)

Ill: knowing our own end and the wisdom God has given us how well are we preparing?

In the midst of the abundance of the land he too is blessed with great personal abundance:

‌III. Blessed with Two Sons (50-52)

Genesis 41:50–52ESV

Before the year of famine came, two sons were born to Joseph. Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera priest of On, bore them to him. Joseph called the name of the firstborn Manasseh. “For,” he said, “God has made me forget all my hardship and all my father’s house.” The name of the second he called Ephraim, “For God has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction.”

His sons are given Hebrew names as well as named by Jospeh

In the family of God we now have an Egyptian line

A. Manasseh

-God has made him Forget

B. Ephraim

-God Has made him Fruitful

‌IV. God’s Word Proves True (53-57)

Genesis 41:53–57ESV

The seven years of plenty that occurred in the land of Egypt came to an end, and the seven years of famine began to come, as Joseph had said. There was famine in all lands, but in all the land of Egypt there was bread. When all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried to Pharaoh for bread. Pharaoh said to all the Egyptians, “Go to Joseph. What he says to you, do.” So when the famine had spread over all the land, Joseph opened all the storehouses and sold to the Egyptians, for the famine was severe in the land of Egypt. Moreover, all the earth came to Egypt to Joseph to buy grain, because the famine was severe over all the earth.

A. 7 years of Plenty gives way to famine

-All that God said had begun to come to pass

-Might have been easy to forget was coming in the midst of the good times

-But True to his word

B. There remained bread in the land of Egypt

-And thanks to the wisdom of God the people in Egypt had bread for a time

-then their personal supplies ran out and they turned to Pharaoh

C. Joseph opens the storehouse to feed the world.

Genesis 12:2–3ESV

And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

Application

-As we conclude ch 41 we have seen the great sovereignty of God at work to save many, by working all things together to bring Jospeh to Pharaoh and fro Him to be appointed over all of Egypt.

-We can stand back and be amazed at the work of God, but also reminded to not lose sight of the task before us, because the results we fixed Jospeh worked all the more, not less.

-Do we hear the word of God knowing the full faith anf measur eof it is our salvation, does that leads us to the call of God to work out that salvation.

-Do we seek to live in light of the grace we have been given: repenting and believing on his grace

-do we seek to do well to each other and model Christ love for us

-Do we seek to care for those in the church who are left behind by others

-Do we shine the mercy of God to the word around us knowing the end is sure for all those outside of Christ.

-Christ did not forget us.

-He left glory to take on human flesh to dwell among us, to be killed by us to saved us, all to rise in power and authority to give grace to those who rebelled against him.

Christ is far better to us than Jospeh

As we close I want to go back to where we began this Morning:

Blessed Be Your Name:

Blessed Be Your Name In the land that is plentiful Where Your streams of abundance flow Blessed be Your name

Blessed Be Your name When I’m found in the desert place Though I walk through the wilderness Blessed Be Your name

Every blessing You pour out I’ll turn back to praise When the darkness closes in, Lord Still I will say

Blessed be the name of the Lord Blessed be Your name Blessed be the name of the Lord Blessed be Your glorious name

Blessed be Your name When the sun’s shining down on me When the world’s ‘all as it should be’ Blessed be Your name

You give and take away You give and take away My heart will choose to say Lord, blessed be Your name
